"Natural Beauty at Home" & "Natural Beauty for all Seasons" both are by Janice Cox. Apparently, she's kinda like the guru on home recipes - and as you requested, more recipes: Cocoa Butter Eye Cream 2 tbsp petroleum jelly 2 tbsp cocoa butter 2 tbsp coconut oil Mix all of the ingredients together in an ovenproof glass container. Heat gently in the microwave or in a water bath (place the glass pitcher in a pan with 1 or 2 inches of water and heat). Pour into a clean container and cool completely; the mixture will solidify as it cools. Use nightly around your eyes. Yields 3 oz. (The sensitive skin under the eye needs extra care and conditioning. Cocoa Butter has been used for years to treat age lines around the eyes and mouth. It helps soften and protect delicate skin. This eye cream is rich, so a small amount is all that is needed nightly) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Lanolin Lip Balm 1 tsp lanolin 1 tsp grated beeswax 1 tsp petroleum jelly Melt the lanolin, wax, and petroleum jelly together over medium heat in a glass measuring cup in a pan of boiling water (water bath technique). Pour the melted mixture into a lip gloss container or clean pillbox. Cool completely, until cool to the touch, approx. 20 minutes. Rub into lips and enjoy. Yields 1/2 oz. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Basic Shampoo A 1/4 cup water 1/4 cup liquid soap (castille or one for sensative skin, etc.) 1/2 tsp light vegetable oil (if you have oily hair, then omit oil) Mix together all the ingredients. Pour the shampoo into a clean squeeze bottle or empty shampoo bottle. Shampoo as normal and rinse well with cool water. Basic Shampoo B 1 cup water 1/2 cup liquid soap or inexpensive shampoo 1/2 cup glycerine 1/4 cup borax powder Mix all the ingredients together. Pour the shampoo into a clean squeeze bottle. Let the mixture sit overnight to thicken. Shampoo as normal and rinse well with cool water. Yields 16 oz. ~~~~~~~~~~ Herbal Shampoo 1/2 cup water 2 tbsp dried or 1/3 cup fresh chamomile, lavender, or rosemary 1/2 cup Basic Shampoo (either one - it's your choice) 2 tbsp glycerine Mix together the water and herbs and heat gently to make a strong tea. Let the mixture steep for at least 20 minutes. Add the shampoo and glycerine to the herbal water mixture and stir well. Pour the shampoo into a clean squeeze bottle. Let the mixture sit overnight to thicken. Yields 8 oz (Chamomile makes a mild shampoo that is perfect for fine, light-colored hair; the flowers have a mild bleaching effect. If you have dark colored hair, use rosemary or lavender to enhance your own natural color) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Desert Wonder Shampoo -this shampoo is great for people who live in dry areas - 1/4 cup Basic Shampoo 1/4 cup aloe vera gel 1 tsp glycerine 1/2 tsp avocado oil Mix all of the ingredients together. Pour the shampoo into a container with a tight fitting lid. Shampoo as normal but leave on an extra few minutes. Rinse with cool water. *note* this shampoo may separate; always shake well to remix before using. The aloe vera plant is sometimes called the "wonder of the desert" because of it's many uses, especially as a moisterizer for the skin and hair. Over the years Christina Blume has developed and collected dozens of herbal recipes for a variety of skin-care products, which she shares in her "All Natural Face Care" course she teaches at Denver Botanic Gardens. Here are some of her favorites: Basic Cleansing Cream (recipe from Dina Falconi) 7 ounces almond or apricot kernel oil 3/4 ounce beeswax 10 ounces distilled water 1 teaspoon borax 25 drops rosemary essential oil 15 drops lavender essential oil 10 drops orange essential oil Place beeswax and base oil in a heatproof measuring cup in a hot water bath. Stir occasionally until the beeswax is melted. Remove from heat and let cool to body temperature. Meanwhile, dissolve borax in distilled water that you have heated to body temperature and add the essential oils to this borax / water blend. Pour the oil mixture into a bowl and begin beating using a one-blade hand mixer. Slowly add the borax water, beating until thick and creamy, about 5 minutes. Adjustable clay mask Blume's clay base is a mixture of bentonite clay and powdered herbs and seaweed. She grinds chamomile, peppermint, lavender, seaweed and rose petals and adds 1 part herbs to 3 parts clay. To make the mask, mix 2 tablespoons of clay base with 2 tablespoons of liquid (from the following recipes). Oily skin 2 tablespoons clay base 1 tablespoon witch hazel 1/2-1 tablespoon organic cider vinegar 2 drops citrus essential oil: orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit or a combination Normal skin 2 tablespoons clay base 1 1/2 tablespoons yogurt 2 drops essential oil: rose, lavender, chamomile, ylang ylang, rosewood, geranium or a combination Dry skin 1 tablespoon clay base 1 1/2-2 tablespoons jojoba oil 2 drops essential oil: rose, geranium, rosewood, lavender, chamomile, palmarose, rosemary, clary sage or a combination. You can turn any of these recipes into natural alpha hydroxy masks with the following substitutions: For oily skin, use 1 1/2 to 2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed citrus juice in place of the witch hazel / vinegar. For normal skin, use 2 tablespoons of pureed kiwi, strawberry, apple or peach in place of the yogurt. For dry skin, use 1 1/2 tablespoons of pureed kiwi, strawberry, apple or peach and 2-3 tablespoons of jojoba oil. Rosemary Gladstar's Pimple Juice (may be used as an astringent or dabbed onto pimples) Use 1 pint of vodka as the base and add 1/2 ounce each of the following finely ground herbs: echinacea, myrrh, Oregon grape root, black walnut hull. Pour together in a Mason jar, cap tightly and shake once a day for 2 weeks. Strain the juice into a dark bottle and cap tightly. This will keep for a few years without refrigeration. Healing Lip Balm 1/4 cup castor oil 1/4 cup coconut oil 1/2 ounce beeswax contents of 2 vitamin E oil capsules 1/2 teaspoon peppermint essential oil 8-10 drops tea tree essential oil In a small non-aluminum saucepan, melt the first three ingredients over low heat. Remove from heat and cool for about 5 minuts. Add vitamin E and essential oils, stir well and pour mixture into small jars or tubes. Wait until the balm has completely cooled before putting lids on the jars. Blume said this is a fun concoction to make at a sleepover party for young girls.
